Why you should add tongue scraping to your daily routine
This should be an important part of your daily routine
Brushing and flossing are considered as the two important daily routines for oral health hygiene. Most of the people follow the two procedures dutifully- they brush their teeth twice daily and floss regularly to keep their mouth healthy and clean. But, there is a third step, which is often missed out and that is scraping.
What is scraping?
Scraping is a process of removing the buildup of bacteria, dead cells and debris from the surface of the tongue using a tool made from plastic or metal.
If you haven’t tried scraping, let us first tell you why you need it. Carefully observe your tongue in the mirror and you will notice a thick white layer. The white layer is the buildup from the food we eat and is a thriving ground of bacteria. Scraping helps to remove the white layer from the top of the tongue, returning its original pink colour.
Why it is important?
Our tongue has various important roles to play. It helps us speak, chew and swallow. So, it is crucial to keep it clean just like our teeth. Apart from removing the white buildup, scraping can help to…
Increase your sense of taste: Our tongue allows us to taste and feel textures in the mouth. Scraping your tongue daily twice can remove the buildup and increase your sense of taste.
Reduce stale odour: Using a tongue scraper can remove the odour causing bacteria from your mouth. A 2004 study suggests that scraping is a more effective method to remove bad odour as compared to brushing.
Improve your oral health: Adding this important step to your daily routine can be good for your overall oral hygiene. It can prevent cavities and gum disease.
How to do it?
Just like brushing, you have to use tongue scraper twice daily. It takes less than a minute to clean your tongue. You just need to buy a tongue scraper for it.
Step 1: Stand in front of the mirror, open your mouth and stick out your tongue.
Step 2: Hold the tongue cleaner and gently set the rounded end of the tongue scraper at the top of your tongue.
Step 3: Do it three-four times and you will see the white buildup coming out of your tongue.
Step 4: Rinse your mouth with water.
