People dealing with the problem of sleeplessness are also advised to drink milk before going to bed. It is said that doing so can improve the quality of your sleep and provide relief from stress. Does milk really help you fall asleep?
As per some studies carried out on a small group of humans and animals showed that having any kind of dairy product like cheese and milk may have some positive impact on your sleep. People who drink milk before going to bed may sleep peacefully at night. As per researches, milk contains two important compounds-tryptophan and melatonin, which may act as a sleep inducer.
The two compounds
Tryptophan helps in the production of a neurotransmitter called serotonin, which is known to improve mood and relax your mind. On the other hand, melatonin helps control your circadian rhythm and prepare your body to go to sleep. These two compounds have been proven beneficial when dealing with the problem of sleep disorder. Make people even take supplements of this compound when dealing with insomnia. However, it has still not been proven that by drinking a glass of milk containing these two compounds can be as effective as the supplements.

Due to lack of evidence and strong belief of people, most experts think that milk’s sleep-promoting potential is related to psychological effects. It is argued that having anything soothing before going to bed can promote good night’s sleep and the same is with milk.
Is it good to drink milk at night?
Drinking milk at night is also linked with weight gain. It is even harmful to people suffering from constipation and erratic eating habits. It can make the symptoms of constipation worse and cause digestion issues in people having erratic eating habit. Milk in itself is considered a wholesome food, which is packed with all essential nutrients. So, it is best to consume it separately. The best time can be morning or evening.

There is no scientific evidence that proves that drinking milk before going to bed helps you fall asleep. You can also sip a cup of warm herbal tea for better sleep. However, if you still want to try it, then there is no harm. Always drink warm milk at least 30 minutes before going to bed.
